Genre Conventions - Music and Sound

Horror Conventions- Music and sound

Music is very significant in a horror film as it sets the scene and evokes strong feelings from the audience, it can enhance the scene and make the film flow more as the music sets the mood. Nowadays the audience connects a certain soundtrack to a certain film so it is essential to have an original soundtrack.

In all horrors, they have the same diegetic/non-diegetic sounds, the usual sounds are whispers, bells chiming and high pitched orchestral sounds, these are the universal sounds of horror. As these sounds are commonly used the audience will have pre-perceived reactions to the sounds and be expecting to be scared. This is why we are using lots of high pitched noises and wispers throughout the film.

Voices in horror films are usually distorted to create the creepy sounds which are used to haunt the audience and make the film extra horrific and create more of an inhuman creature to be the antagonist. This adds to the point of, fear of the unknown. Because of this we plan to include a whisper at the end of our film when the lights switch off, this is to make the audience feel that they are within a close proximity with the antagonist and the whisper makes it feel more intimate, the black screen adds tension to this as the audience can not see anything.

We realise that most films incorporate their own soundtrack but as we are under time pressure this would not be ideal at the minute. Because o this we plan to get  music from websites,  as there is copyrights against taking music from the internet we have chosen tracks from the websites which Simon provided to avoid this obstacle.

These websites are:
Freeplaymusic.com
Freemusicarchive.org
Proudmusiclibrary.com
