Genre Conventions - Music and Sound

In every film we are able to hear different sounds and music which creates a certain atmosphere allowing us to experience a film more deeply and emotionally. This applies especially to horror films as music is very important in creating the right atmosphere to make the film unsettling. The atmosphere is what creates the overall enjoyable experience for the audience. A soundtrack helps to build up a certain feeling that will contribute to the movies overall success.
Even though there is a major diversity in the music that has been used throughout different horror films, some of these common conventions include:
  • Isolated instruments; which are often used just before a key event occurs which helps link the idea of vulnerability, to the audience.
  • Long suspenseful notes; which often help contrast with short sharp notes to help shock the audience.
  • Extreme but intentional changes in pitch; for example, low long brass notes which suddenly change to very fast high pitched notes to make the audience feel a sudden tension.
How to Make Music Sound Scary:

Vocal wise, voices in horror films are usually distorted to create the creepy sounds which are used to unsettle the audience and make the film extra horrific and create more of an inhuman creature to be the antagonist. This adds to the point of, fear of the unknown.
